The research on Echinacea is abundant, if you are tired of being susceptible to whatever is going around, this is what you need. A daily dose will help raise your protection and defence. Echinacea has a particular affinity for the lymphatic glands and for this reason makes a great gargle for the tonsils too.
Echinacea has a rich history of use. It was extensively used by Native American tribes for hundreds of years to treat infections, inflammation and wounds and was adopted as a medicine in the 19th century by European settlers and in the early 20th century become one of the most frequently prescribed medicines in America. As we so often see, the traditional use of the plant becomes verified by scientific studies centuries later.
One of the key constituents in Echinacea are called alkylamides, these are the compounds that are responsible for making your tongue tingle and indeed is why Echinacea is a sialagogue, which means it increases saliva production.
Scientific research has demonstrated that alkylamides:
stimulate white blood cells, namely the macrophages, to engulf and destroy pathogens in a process called phagocytosis.
increase natural killer cell cytotoxicity, enhancing early defence against virally infected cells
modulate cytokine production, simultaneously reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines whilst upregulating anti-inflammatory cytokines. Hence Echinacea is an immune modulator which is a very important attribute when tackling infections which create inflammation which is sometimes overwhelming.
