Description
Astragalus membranaceous is a wonderful immune enhancing herb, making it an excellent herb of choice to take in the longer term for chronic and repeated infections. In such cases, night sweats are a common feature for which Astragalus is always my go to. It a valuable heart tonic and I have used with great benefits in combination with other herbs such as hawthorn. Astragalus promotes the formation of white blood cells where they are low in a condition called leukopenia. It is an excellent herb for chronic fatigue, partly because it raises the immune system and partly because it is considered an adaptogen. Adaptogens raise the body’s resistance to biological stressors and promotes normal physiological function, including immune system function. For this reason, it is a great herb of choice for post-viral fatigue.
In hospitals in China, it is routinely used in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. One on the side effects from both of these treatments is that is lowers the immune system, making the patient more vulnerable to serious infection. Astragalus helps to mitigate this effect.
Another way in which Astragalus protects and promotes good immune system health other than boosting white blood cells is due to a polysaccharide molecule in Astragalus called Astragalan B which binds to the outer surface of the cell membrane of rogue cells such as bacteria and other rogue cells, helping T-cells identity and neutralise them.
Canceractive.com has an excellent synopsis of the role of Astragalus in regulating the immune function:
