Description
Milk Thistle for liver health and protection.
Milk thistle protects the liver cells in chronic liver disease such as fatty liver disease, liver damage, hepatitis and fibrosis.
“These hepatoprotective effects were observed in clinical studies in patients with alcoholic or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, including patients with cirrhosis. In a pooled analysis of trials in patients with cirrhosis, silymarin treatment was associated with a significant reduction in liver-related deaths.”

The collective active constituents in milk thistle are known as silymarin.
Silymarin, is also used in hospitals to prevent death by rapid liver failure after accidental ingestion of deadly mushrooms of the Amanita species such as the death cap or destroying angel.
Death cap mushrooms, accidentally ingested by foragers, usually kills within days due to rapid liver destruction, but an infusion of silymarin reduces death by rapid liver destruction by 50%, demonstrating it’s extreme importance and vital action on the liver.

Milk thistle can be used to protect liver health and assist detoxification, correct hormonal imbalances and alleviate mood disorders (interestingly the old name for depression – “melancholia”, meaning black bile), reduce heavy metal levels. It can also promote digestion reduce bloating and constipation
It’s important to note that silymarin is not readily bioavailable – not easily absorbed. This tincture in my dispensary is extracted it such a way to make the silymarin more easily absorbed.
It is my belief that it is good to periodically boost liver health with herbs such as milk thistle, particularly because of the increasing environmental toxins we are exposed to.
